First Place Award Compact Kitchen NKBA Ontario Design Competition
The young family living in this home love its location and the overall open concept space on the main floor. The existing kitchen was located at the back of the house and had a small island. There was a wall separating the entrance to the basement from the backyard, which made the kitchen feel small and closed in.
The clients were looking to open up the back wall with sliding glass doors, remove the basement entrance and open up the kitchen for a better flow and function. They also wanted their personal style to shine and were open to playing with lighting to add layers and depth to the open space.
By adding wall to wall windows and patio door, the kitchen now has a long island with seating. The island is the focal point of the space, featuring custom made tambour paneling on the two sides, a stone waterfall facing the backyard, and a cantilever bar seating for a few stools.
There are four materials used in the kitchen. A light stained white oak, to add warmth to the space. Quartz countertop and backsplash, for durability and easy maintenance; and porcelain bar top for seating. Gold laminate accents were added to add depth and interest to the island. This was mimicked on the cooktop wall, where the hood fan is clad in quartz, framed by gold trim at the bottom.
Layers of lighting were incorporated into the design to add interest to the kitchen. Toe kick LED strip lights add diffused lighting and can be used as a night light. Under cabinet lighting serves a functional purpose while cooking. Pot lights are used for general lighting and the pendant lights are additional lighting for the island surface. The clients have a variety of light sources to use to add interest to the space
